Bringing my daughter to Mayo for treatment that will last over 3 weeks. Need somewhere affordable to stay. Would prefer somewhere we can do light cooking, but at least microwave and refrigerator for leftovers. Expenses will add up quick since we have to be there for so long. Suggestions on somewhere convenient to Mayo, budget-friendly, and safe for two women would be greatly appreciated. Opinions of areas to avoid are appreciated, too. Thanks in advance.

maybe hotels near business areas like southpoint/gate parkway (west end of J turner butler) which is 10 min drive from Mayo. Should be safe and reasonably priced with plenty of dining nearby. Baymeadows area is another option. There is a hotel on Kernan Blvd at the north end which is also 10-15 min from Mayo.

Check VRBO or Airbnb. Should be able to find a condo/townhouse or even a house at a pretty reasonable daily rate.

Are you ruling out the Inn at Mayo Clinic? Or the Courtyard nearby? They specifically cater to out-of-town patients...

Thought about those places too but figured it would be too much for a 3 week stay. Don't know their budget but the Inn at Mayo typically runs $180+ per night for the cheapest room and the lowest long term rate at the Courtyard is $160 per night.

She should be able to find a condo/townhouse in Jax Beach near Mayo on VRBO/Airbnb for $100 or less per night.

Thanks for all of the ideas. Someone also suggested finding a furnished apartment (not extended stay hotel) for 1 month (for Sept after Labor Day). Here in TN, sometimes apartment complexes have such arrangements, but don't advertise it. Anybody have a lead for me? Would love to be close to beach, if possible.

Thanks again!

Try AirB&B or VRBO.

Thanks for your advice. You are totally right. A nearly month-long stay including transportation, food and lodging is going to very expensive. That doesn't even take into consideration the large medical bills involved. So, our budget is best described as shoestring. We need somewhere as cheap as possible, but still safe, clean and convenient. Safety is a big concern because my daughter is in a wheelchair and we are traveling alone.

Like your idea of VRBO. Hopefully I can find even cheaper rates for stay after Labor Day.

Have you talked to the hospital to see if they have some places that give big discounts to their patients and family? Some may even have free shuttles running you back and forth.
