A real tragedy for sure. And for an area struggling to stay afloat and shed itself of having a reputation as an area to avoid - there have been several shootings there within the past few years.

I'm guessing this is one of those kids who grew up without proper socialization, who's head was probably buried in his video games (and phone) for many years and did not have the coping skills to be able to deal with a loss and probably some "ribbing" afterwards.

It's said the shooter was a loner. My thing is, these mass shooters take out multiple innocents and then kill themselves. That's a coward move. If you're bold enough to take innocent lives, be bold enough to face your punishment.

Knew I could count on you to cut to the chase...let me add this

Just because you're PO'd about something, whether it's losing in a video game tourney, or road rage, or umpty-dozen other things I could list, doesn't mean you need to go run get a daggone gun to 'settle things'...

You just took the lives of, or endangered the lives of, innocent people so you could show the world how big your (equipment) is...and then suicide by gun at the end? Like Northside said, if you do the crime, then get ready to do the time

Just an odd situation. Most of the time when these shooters commit suicide their plan is to take people out first, then take their own life. This guy didn't seem to have this planned.....otherwise, why bother playing in a Madden tournament first? In the end, the dude was obviously crazy. Probably not much could have been done to prevent this unless we're going to start having metal detectors for literally any/every event where there are large groups of people.

That's how I do, get right to it. I can't respect anyone who takes out innocents and then kills themselves. That's foul in my book.

Another nutter with a history of mental illness. So, he wasn't flagged as a nutter because he was a minor.

Well it is Madden. If you're not aware, competitive gaming can get pretty cutthroat especially with trash talk (not just Madden but other professional gaming as well). For the most part, at this level (the highest level) there is more camaraderie than anger and bad blood, but it still gets heated from time to time and supposedly there was a little bit of trash talk/unsportsmanlike behavior. The shooter seemed to have a chip on his shoulder too thinking he was better than his ranking, and he didnt do well at this tourney. The two who were killed were the overall champion from two years ago and one of the fastest rising stars.

Anyway, just a lot of speculation here but I think if/when it all comes out this will be more or less the explanation (he was angry at losing to someone he thought he was better than, plus the fact he was mentally unstable and the trash talk pushed him over the edge). Reminds me of that other guy who was killed as a result of online gaming trash talk when one of the angry gamers called police with a fake 911 call and SWAT killed the man who came to the door. I was reading some of the gaming chats following the tragedy and some people were suggesting we find a way to tone down the trash talk.

Actually, this wasn't a Jacksonville problem, since this dude wasn't from here. Still wondering a lot about the gun? How did this guy get here? Drive or fly? If he flew, he had to get the gun here. Why did he even have a gun? Still a number of unanswered questions.

Wonder how many folks will go to The Landing for the "Largest Cocktail Party In The World" during the Florida/Georgia game. Probably be all forgotten about by then.

When we'd take our boat out, we'd almost always wind up tying up at the Landing and having lunch at the Mexican Restaurant there. Wife seriously doubts we will go to the Landing ever again, but that was the only place we could get our boat into to have a little fun. Have a bite to eat and then kick back on the boat for awhile.

I read that he obtained the gun legally. And apparently Maryland has strict gun laws.....or at least strict compared to, say, Florida. I'm guessing he drove here. Just from the photos and videos of this lunatic, he looked very much like the Aurora movie theater clown who shot up that movie theater.
