I'm retired Navy and my wife has one more tour before she will retire too. We're looking to do her last set of orders to NAS Jacksonville, and settle down. She can deal with a long commute for 2 years.

I lived in Atlantic Beach years ago and it was awesome, but this time we want to be a little bit rural, have 2-5 acres, a backyard garage/workshop for a small business, and good schools for our 2 kids.

I've heard Maccleny is worth looking into. I have a boat, so I'd like to be within driving range of a boat ramp. So maybe a town closer to the water. Although the boat is further down the want list rather than the other requirements.

Ideas on good towns to look into?

assuming you want land that already has a house on it? Not sure of your budget but I personally like the north st johns county area that is fairly rural but also 15 minutes from Julington creek and not much longer south to St Augustine. Close to the river etc...

For searching I like redfin. Check zip codes 32092 and 32259 and apply filters for lot size, price etc... A rated schools and depending on traffic 30-45 minutes to NAS.

Across to the river to the west, you can check Keystone Heights and Green Cove Springs. Not sure about schools but guessing they fall in the average range (Elementary schools usually rank higher too). Price may be cheaper and commute to NAS is less than 1 hour.

That's great information, thank you. I'll check into it. Not completely sure on our budget, but $400-500k is what we're roughly looking into spending. Maybe less if the market is cheaper up there. I'm used to Northern VA and now Miami area housing prices.

St Johns Co has good schools, but finding a home with 2+acres will be a challenge at at price. There were a few that popped up on Zillow when putting in your criteria though, a few near the St Johns River. Nassau County might be another good option for you.
