I lived in Chicago, Illinois from November 2016 to October 2017. It said when I did my taxes in 2018 that I owed the state of Illinois $1700 in back taxes. However I got back $1200 that year and decided to keep the money because I needed it for car repairs.

I kept getting calls from bill collectors saying I owed them money for months. Eventually I told them to just do a tax offset from my 2019 tax returns. I even got an official letter from the IRS stating that they were going to garnish my tax teturns.

Much to my surprise, I got my tax return deposited into my bank account and got a big tax return for $1800 because I filed head of the household and had two dependents. I just got a second job because times are tight and could really use the money.

What should I do? Can they garnish my paycheck and how long will that take? They screwed it up

Call the IRS. See what they have to say.

I just got a second job and my check for my second job hits soon along with my irs return. Should I redact the IRS money from my bank account tomorrow so they cant garnish it?

Once the money hits your bank account can they still take it or do they have to go through the process of garnishing your wages at that point? How fast do these people move?

Try moving this to the personal finance section. This isn't really Jacksonville specific issue.
