Got back from Jacksonville a few days ago. I stayed at a hotel near Jax Beach. Very nice area and very clean but out of my price range.

One thing that stunned me is the amount of homeless people in Jax and Neptune beaches. In 6 days I saw more homeless people there than I have in 15 years living in NYC. Not exaggerating at all, and it's not like I lived in the most elite areas of NYC. That was the only thing that was a glaring negative issue.

What is the reason for so many homeless people? Anything being done to get rid of this problem?

There are programs and they usually require the participant to do things like apply for jobs and succeed in work placement etc...If they fail or don't want to do these things then they stay on the streets. If I was homeless, I would probably hang around the beaches too.

The weather is nicer, there's public bathrooms and showers here and there. I'm sure the handouts are more available too with the amount of foot and car traffic from patrons, bar hoppers. There have actually been some legendary homeless folks at the beaches over the years where people know their names, buy them meals and what not. The name of the guy in Atl Beach with the crutches and one leg is slipping my mind...Curtis! If you spent 10 minutes with this guy you would be a better person. I'm pretty sure he passed away a few years back. They don't typically cause trouble and are genuinely thankful when people offer something. I don't usually do much personally but I've been in the car with people who ran through a McD's and grabbed some burgers and strolled up and handed them out to people. It was humbling.

Ah yes, another "I saw" post where someone exaggerates to try and make a point. If you think there are more homeless in Jax/Neptune Beach than NYC, you must have been counting every single person on the beach. NYC has just shy of 80,000 homeless as of 2018 (reported). Jax Beach has only 23,518 in total population. So your count is juuuuuuuust a tad off.

Please take this sensationalist point of view elsewhere.

Last time I was in NY, we stayed at an Airbnb in Chelsea at the mere cost of $1500 a night for 700 square feet. What's funny is that's about 10x more expensive than Jax Beach, and oddly there was a bum that hung out on the stoop. My experience is that NY is significantly more expensive than Jax Beach (surprised that you find NY cheaper!) and that there are more bums.

If I were a bum, I'd pick Jax Beach over NY any day, so maybe the bums down south are smarter? At least that's a good thing.

Last time my Wife and I went to NYC we took the train seeing that it was more convenient and to our surprise there were
so many homeless setting up camp around the entrances of Penn station that you couldn't walk by without stepping on them.

Sorry but this is a bit much. I used to walk from Port Authority bus station to Times Square every day when I worked for Morgan Stanley. No comparison with respect to the amount of homeless I saw on my commute there vs JB/NB.

I walk the entire length of Neptune Beach every single morning, and then some. I see maybe 3 homeless per year, passing through on their way to Jax Beach or further south.

I have no idea where you were, but it wasn't Neptune Beach.

I have never seen a homeless person on Jax Beach. You want to see homeless people, go to San Francisco. There are 1000's sleeping everywhere, harassing you for money. There are plenty in NYC, you just need to know where to look, plus its freezing cold in the winter and hot as h in the summer.

Correct. And just about any/every major urban downtown has ample homeless panhandling for money because that's where the money is via employees and tourists. I worked downtown Denver for years and was asked probably every day for money with some BS story about needing bus fare, a broken down car, etc.

Nobody is going to Jax Beach to panhandle.
