Eeek! Thanks for the warning! We’ve been in our fair share of nightmare HOAs and looks like we’re probably gonna be in one again moving over there and this is the kind of thing I want to avoid! Our last HOA sent is a letter for putting a for sale sign outside our house!

I recommend you attend HOA meetings and make your voice heard, and perhaps make a motion to have the HOA rules changed.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt JCP is as bad as you say it is. Sounds like you possibly don't take very good care of your house/yard and have received warning letters and now you have an axe to grind. Anyone who moves into a covenant controlled community should know there are rules about the appearance of one's home and yard, that shouldn't come as a surprise. And leaving toys laying around in one's yard does, indeed, look trashy.

I will say, however, I received a letter once about my mailbox post looking worn and that it needed to be painted. My house and yard are pretty immaculate while we have neighbors who leave their recycle/trash bins outside 7 days a week, which did not make me happy. I think sometimes HOAs need to prioritize what they are looking for.
