Yeah those 400--500 JEA bills are not uncommon. I paid them for years in my older 1600 sq ft house built in 2001. When we got a new AC it dropped some but still, bad windows, bad everything else.

Yes.I agree...we have a new AC unit also, still JEA is so high...everything I do does nothing to lower it.Since, they also raise their rates.. Windows are next...my neighbor said that helped him a bit. So time will tell.

And here I was thinking my costs would be low if there was no mortgage on the house.

It is 'low' compared to higher St. johns county taxes, HOA and CDD fees...That is a plus..you don't have those!
(at least that is what I tell myself..since I love my house and how convenient Mandarin is to everything in Jax)

but $450 a month for electric is kinda excessive

I used a bill estimator on JEA, a central AC uses 3500 watts of power. From the looks of it, you should be using more than 3500 watts every hour of the month!

I used 2742 KWH for the month = $327.07..the balance is sewer /water.
