158 people were the victims of homicide in 2019 in Duval County. Of those, 132 were men and 100 were black men. Black men were 63% of the victims despite being only 14% of the population. Zip code 32209 is 95% black and saw 17% of the killing despite having only 4% of the city's population.

Now if you have a pea brain and voted for Trump, you probably think I'm trying to make some Sean Hannity point about black gangs. The reality is that our idiot city government thinks they can shove a square peg into a round hole through brute force policing that takes up $439 million or 36% of the city's budget. Compare this to the fact that the NYPD doesn't even make up 6% of NYC's budget.

You want to reduce crime? You stop catering to the middle class white suburbs' demands for more policing and take that JSO money and invest it in the most affected communities, starting with zip code 32209. If you're an upper middle class white woman on the Southside, your chances of being the victim of a homicide by a stranger (instead of your ex-husband or boyfriend) is close to zero. I am tired of reading hysterical local news comments about crime from old white people who are on Facebook all day and don't know the real story. And I don't have the data but I'm willing to bet that the majority of the white murder victims were poorer folks that the wealthy in Mandarin and Ortega don't care about either.

Raise property taxes on all homes worth more than $500,000. Take 75% of JSO's budget. Use this money to fund road and utilities repairs, public schools, parks, libraries, subsidize after school care, zero-interest small business community bank loans, etc. Economic inequality leads to crime. Some of the safest countries in the world like Switzerland and Finland and Uruguay have the lowest inequality and huge social programs.

I think OP's sentiments are pretty spot on. Not really racist at all unless you're going the "reverse racism" route cause he picks on and generalizes rich white people.

He's basically saying two things: police and other infrastructure seems to be disproportionately spent in high income areas, and that there are better ways to address crime than simply spending on more police, since income inequality is perhaps the greatest underlying issue. Neither of these points is racist at all.

You realize that's basically how the world works, right? Across the globe and throughout history. To what degree and what implementation varies greatly, but those with power and wealth must find a way to provide at least a degree of livability for the less fortunate, or they won't maintain their wealth and power (political instability, crime, revolution of financial systems or corporate structures, etc)

So however it is done, whether wealth redistribution, job creation, or something in between, all of us (rich and poor) need poverty to be minimal and a healthy middle class to exist.

Wow. You do realize that you're coming off just as racist as the OP did, don't you? Reverse racism is still racism and bolsters no points the OP made.

I thought you were smarter than this....

This is one reason why all civilizations, countries, etc that have come before us have FAILED and why those same people want to come here. Socialism doesn't work.

You sound like a Asian Bernie Sanders.

You missed the point entirely. It has nothing to do with socialism. Strictly heeding market forces would still result in rich people needing to find a way to support a healthy middle class and to minimize poverty.

The method of doing it and the principles can be totally different, but it will be boiled down to "free houses and free money for the poor" in some degree. The socialist will say it's best done through taxes by the govt. The capitalist might say that private corporations have to subsidize housing for their poorest workforce. A conservative might think this is the responsibility of non-profits and wealthy donors.

Anyway that was my point.

Boy have I got news for you. My ancestors didn't come here because of failed socialism. They came here because capitalism stripped them of their humanity and turned them into bar codes. Not everyones story is the same.

The Central Americans come here because they are from failed narco/terrorist states.

The Middle Easterners are somewhat the same, fleeing persecution.

White Europeans just stay put because they're not giving up their safety net to live in a nation as ignorant and individualist as the US. (But they do love Canada)

The United States had its largest economic and infrastructure expansion when it was at it's most "socialist". If it weren't for Jim Crow, Reganism and de-industrialization, we would have seen the hybrid of FDR and MLK's dream finally come to fruition. But Nooooooo, we have to have neo libs and crony capitalism.

Oh my! The prosperity that America enjoyed in the mid 20th century was the envy of the world...and we wasted it on building endless suburbs and war...and here we are today suburban Jacksonville: one of the largest cities in North America

32208 and 32209 make up the Northside ghetto, this is where the majority of violent crime happens on the Northside. Of the murders that happen in these two zip codes, they are almost always due to being involved in the thug life. As long as you're not slinging drugs, you escape the bulk of violent crime that happens in the 'hood. Then, there's retaliation shootings and murders that take place; someone has conflict with another person, they blow their brains out with a shotgun. It's not the police's responsibility to control crime in the ghetto, it's up to the residents. The problem is that the hood has adopted a culture of violence and thuggery, then when violence hits close to home, the same folks want to cry "Stop The Violence". Then there's this no snitch policy that is rampant in the hood; you can't go to the police with what you know because you and/or your family could be a target. There's a saying in the hood called "Streets Is Watching", that term means an inner-city criminal has friends in the hood that keep an eye out for anyone who may consider going to the police about their criminal activity. The criminal's friends inform him that the cops may be hot on him, so that criminal and his associates confront the citizen(s) and let them know if they tell the police, they can expect retaliation.
