Recently, my car was nearly slammed by a security gate (I had to floor the accelerator to get out of the way).

The set-up was a visitor box about 25ft from the gate. It was night time and there was a remote attendant.

Question: Do these gates use a timer and shut after a set number of seconds, or does the remote rep press a button to open and then close?

Is there a sensor that waits for you to clear the gate?

I know I would not be happy if that happened to my car, but I've heard it happening in my development.

There are remotes to open them, there are codes you can punch in to open them and I'm confident all of them have sensors to avoid crashing into vehicles.

We're never confident on the proper operation of gates and sensors

I live in a community with such a set up. There is a timer but there are also sensors. If the gate is closing as I am driving up to it and reach the area in front of the gate before it completely closes, the gate will reopen. I would suggest reporting the matter to your HOA so they can look into it. I would also look into whether the HOA is doing any form of preventive maintenance.

The gates I am familure with open for x number of seconds. Ample time for the car to go through. If there is a following car the gate stays open longer.
