Okay, I give you long term Jacksonvillians this challenge.

Give me your top 10 things that a new resident needs to know. Although they can be humorous, they should also be useful.

GO!

1. Wait 5 seconds until you press the gas when the light turns green...

2. It DOES get cold in the winter

3. Don't make fun of football, (high school, college or pro) we love it and have loyalities that run deep and wide

4. You're in Florida, it's in the south, so most of us consider ourselves Southerners!

5. Even though this is the corporate headquaters of Winn Dixie....take it from a local and shop at Publix

6. Live so that you're driving to work against traffic

7. Wave and smile...even if you don't know us and always return the favor...you've just experienced southern hospitality!

8. It's Or teeee ga....not Or tay ga

9. Read Jacksonville Magazine, lots of good local info there

10. Don't be afraid of...hurricanes (you can get away from them in due time if need be)....alligators, (I'll bet you won't ever see one in your neighborhood)...palmetto bugs, (they won't bite), Bubbas, (they're the salt of the earth!!) or to ask for directions or help...we're a friendly town!

Oh nice, very good very good. I DID notice when I was there how many people go through red lights. Reminded me of Tallahassee.

I'm from Gainesville, so most of that is true in Gainesville as well.

If you want to see Jaguar homegames, you need to purchase a ticket, preferrably a season ticket. (Then maybe, the home games won't be blacked out.)

2. It's far more suburban that urban.

3. There's plenty of good thai and japanese food, but good italian is harder to find.

4. You need a good running car here, you will be very dependent upon it.

5. The city is a collection of neighborhoods, each with their own identity.

6. There's some fascinating history here for those who wish to explore it.

7. One of the largest historic districts of Florida can be found here in Jacksonville, it's the Riverside-Avondale district. This area also has the largest variety of architectural styles in all of Florida. In addition to Riverside-Avondale, another historic neighborhood is Springfield.

Not ten, but..

there is an intersection where Shad Rd. intersects with Shad Rd. to the left. Three Shad Rds. at one intersection.

If someone says something controversial or considered outrageous, it is customary for a subset of local females to reply "well bless your heart." This is not a good thing. But once you master the ability to say it with sincerity, it is a good reaction to have available.

The intersection of Phillips Hwy and Shad Rd. If you drive west on Shad Rd, that road turns into Hood Rd. Continuing west on Hood Rd, it turns into Hartley Rd. What's up with that road that it can't maintain one name?
