Okay geography dummy here...but I know one of you smart CDF folks will give me a prompt reply. My question: where does the St. Johns river come from?? I know if flows south to north. It doesn't flow down from any mountain. It just seems to appear out of the middle of the state somewhere south of here. A spring? I find that hard to believe...the river is so huge and wide?! This just makes no sense to me...??

The St. Johns River comes from near Fellsmere, in Indian River County.

I think it actually comes from a few springs in addition to some tributaries. The reason why it is so wide is it is a mature river and it is actually very lazy, which is actually common for older rivers.

There is a documentary that runs every once in a while where a couple of scientists (biologists?) follow the river underwater !

They start at the source and go north with their final destination being the mouth of the river in Jacksonville. Along the way, they're diving in and out of springs and the aquifer and popping up for air in the strangest places - some beautiful, some terrible. Next time I notice it's on, I'll post it on the forum.

On the link, scroll down the page to the "Geography" section - there is a great description of the 3 basins of the river, how the river is fed, etc.:

During our last vacation back in January, we visited the Blue Springs State Park north of Orlando. Blue Spring is the largest spring on the St. Johns River. Due to its constant water temperature of ca. 70F it is a manatee refuge during the winter months.

The park is spectacular even without the manatees. The trees are gorgeous and the water is so increadibly clear!

Those pics are gorgeous! I would probably pass out and die if a manatee swam up next to me, though. I am deathly affraid of marine life that is bigger than a toy dump truck

Wow those pics are fantastic...I can hardly wait to go to one of these beautiful springs. Check out this months Southern Living magazine too...(you don't have to buy it, just look at it while you're waiting in the grocery line)...there is a feature article with amazing pics and maps for many of the Florida springs. I can't believe all these places are so close to us too. Great day trips!!

Gorgeous pics, CBB!

I've been around that area, but I haven't been to Blue Spring. I just showed your pics to the husband (he's been to Blue Spring) and told him we must go!
