This is truly sad .

The Florida Gopher Tortoise, a Threatened species, is being buried alive by NEFL developers even when tortoise relocation is offered at no cost to the developer .

Here's an excerpt from the article:

"Clay County is one of the counties that leads the state in number of tortoises permitted to be destroyed," she said. "They may suffer for months before dying of dehydration or starvation. ... It is a humane issue."

State-issued permits have authorized the deaths of about 7,500 tortoises in Clay County, and about 19,000 across Northeast Florida since the 1990s. There's no way to know how many have actually been killed.

You can read the whole article here:

LandMar's Saratoga Springs development in Clay flatly turned down the free offer to relocate the tortoises .

Of the Gopher Tortoises' habitat range, Clay county has one of the larger distributions of the tortoises, the builders that build in that county should be the leaders in protecting/relocating the threatened tortoises.

Here's a link for more info about the threatened species:

The Humane Society has some great information too:

No Place to Hide: Gopher Tortoises Can't Outrun the Bulldozers of Florida's Developers | The Humane Society of the United States (http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/issues_facing_wildlife/habitat_loss_and_fragmentation/gopher_tortoises_cannot_outrun.html - broken link)

We had a Gopher Tortoise living in our front yard years back. We just left him alone, especially since Gopher Tortoises are known to shack up with rattlesnakes . One day, he just moved out .

There's no reason why these developers shouldn't allow the rescue workers relocate the tortoises, it costs them nothing and they don't have to do a damn thing but allow the rescue efforts to take place.

Someone should send this to all the TV news outlets in the city so it gets mainstream exposure.

It was in the Times Union, and because there's not been a public outcry for these developers to allow the rescue efforts....then the other media sources don't bother to pick up the story. I would love to see them pick it up, as it would help pressure these developers to allow the rescue

Greedy developers, what a shame. That's what happens when greedy developers dont know the importance of relocating them and dont appreciate 'em.

The solution is to take a bulldozer to the homes of developers and demolish them with the developers inside.

If the state of Florida wants to help they can pass a law exempting property owners from any liability if anyone is injured during tortoise rescue. Otherwise we will have to start burying lawyers as well.

I forwarded some info to news4jax.com's tip line, I may contact a few others as well.

It really is a story for NorthEast Florida. We want everyone to know about our area's natural unspoiled beauty and wildlife is intrinsic to that beauty.

We still get poked fun at in NEFL for being "backwards" and such, and these developers and the city managers are really reinforcing that by not protecting what is already threatened to extinction. How stupid can we be?

Excellent plan, Rick!

That's interesting about passing the exemption law .
