Is there a best time of year to purchase a screen for our lanai? Is there a down season when the companies will give us a better deal?
(fall, winter, etc?)

Also, anyone know anything about retractable screens?

I looked at a retractable screen for my lanai but there are some limitations with ceiling height. I wanted the ones that close width-wise because I have dogs (I did not want one that closed up into the ceiling). It didn't work our for me, but it might for you.

I imagine now is as good a time as any to get quotes, it's the end of the summer so the high season would have passed, I'd think.

I do not know when you moved into your home but 'yesterday' is the best time to buy. Ha Ha. I say that because the Love Bugs are out and mosquitoes are flying around.

In all seriousness, Fall and Winter is probably slower for them than in the summer given the holidays and less disposable income for most people at that time.

I have a screened lanai and it allows us to open the 3 section sliding glass door to completely open (in this season where it is cooler) - and I don't worry too much about the bugs because of it.

Regarding sliding/retractable screens, I think there is the potential for gaps allowing bugs/lizards to enter.

dh installed our screen (and neighbors too) himself, he is pretty hand w/ tools. It cost us 20% of the screen co. estimate. Materials all came from lowes and fairly simple install. Just a lot of measuring and cutting. Abouy 25' width by 10' tall < $500.
