Are there any areas in Jacksonville similar to Winter Park where one can walk from one's door to various shops, etc.?

Also, are there any liberal pockets in Jacksonville? I currently live in South Florida, moved here from MA, and I'm tired of reading about prayer meetings as if they were front page news.

Thank you.

there are plenty, just not in the burbs. check out riverside, avondale, san marco, and even springfield which is up and coming. springfield and riverside will be your liberal hot spots, but riverside is becoming more upscale and gentrified while springfield is becoming our new bohemian hotspot. see some of my earlier posts and check out these websites which contain all the info. these people are our urban minded people and support our urban neighborhoods, which arent all run down as some would have u believe, some are our wealthiest neighborhoods.

I'd like to know this too. Somedays I fantasize about moving north, but I too would like a walkable Jacksonville.

As said before, Riverside's a good liberal bubble in Jax, as is Springfield, although Riverside is getting more gentrified and slightly more upscale, dont let the starbucks fool you, it's still gritty in certain parts and has alot of youthful artistic energy, especially where I live off stockton and I-10, but I dont exactly feel like i'm in danger at every corner either. Springfield's great as well, but if you're in your late 20's early 30's like me you'll find you have more options over here, more things to walk to, plus if they ever get this riverside trolley service running beyond lunch time hours, you'd have downtown as your disposal as well. You really can't go wrong living in any of the historic neighborhoods though, springfield, downtown, riverside, murray hill & ortega are all interwoven and seem to feed off of each other very well. San Marco's also a pedestrian friendly neighborhood, but much smaller and a tad bit snooty at times ...you'll find a lot of doctors and lawyers out at the clubs & eateries over there.

I've lived everywhere in this town, the beaches is a great area as well but has less of a left leaning biased, more of that laid back beach mentality, more of restaurants, bars/pubs to walk to. Basically a good place to live if you're into having fun or just have to be near the ocean, but be prepaired to drive intown for work, the beaches isn't quite self sufficient in that sense Ah and if you like watching drunk douchebags fight, it's also good for that too!

I hear some people raving about the st johns town center area as well, but to me it just seems like Jacksonville trying to act like South Florida, which is fine, but not my preference.

well, that's just this 29 y/o' jacksonvillle natives opinoin. Feel free to discover for yourself, this town does have alot of niches, crannies etc.
