My husband is very excited about a job opportunity in zip 32219

I've been reading threads, and I'm nervous, because it appears that the worst neighborhoods are on the North West and West sides of Jacksonville.

We live in a suburb of Chicago right now.

Our requirements would be 1) Excellent Schools for our three kids (ages 5 & 6) 2) short/reasonable commute 3) Safe, Family Friendly

Any thoughts or suggestions for me? Most of these threads seem to have people living on the SE side of Jacksonville...

Yes, the same suggestion would be made in your case, too. There are good schools in parts of Clay County, too, which would be roughly the same commute as from the SE part of Jax (Mandarin, Southside). Fortunately, I think you'd be driving against the flow of traffic during rush hour commutes (at least once you got on the interstate).

Oh, that's actually a relief!

What kind of commute are we looking at? I love that it is reverse of the traffic - 25 minutes?

It is so hard to judge from a map, having never been there!

Thank you for your reply!

Hmmm, depending on how deep into NW Jax it is, it could be anywhere from 25-35 minutes. This would be an I-295 commute, though.

You can't really generalize the whole Westside by what you read on this board. You could easily live in SW Duval County near the Duval and Clay County boarder and not have to worry about crossing the Buckman bridge. SW Duval area includes Oakleaf and Argyle Forest communities and other communities as well. That is a pretty big and well developed area with has tons of housing options and good schools. That would put you at about a 25-35 min commute.

If your husband is going to work at like 8am in the morning using 295 he isn't going against the flow. You have a lot of people that use 295 to get to I-10 but once he gets past I-10 he'll be ok. Coming home from NW Jax on 295 he'll right in the thick of the traffic.

Yeah, remember that Jacksonville has the largest "neighborhoods" of any city you've ever seen. People will talk about the "Westside," "Southside," and "Northside" like these are specific places. In reality they are MASSIVE swaths of land that each cover more area than most entire cities.

So there's a lot of variability depending on which part of which area you are talking about.

Okay, this is all really good info. Thank you! My husband has a dream commute now, so this would definitely be something we need to consider. I don't want him sitting in traffic for two hours a day.

True, but isn't a large majority of the 295 flow going South, across the Buckman?

The flow is about the same on both side before you reach the Buckman.
