Hello, I'm considering a move to the Jacksonville area sometime next year with my new wife and am curious on how the IT job market is there. From what I can tell, there is a presence but it's not as big as Tampa or Orlando. Specifically, I would be looking for work as a Java/Web developer. Does anyone have any insight as to how hard it is finding a consulting gig in this city? More perm positions that contracts? I currently have around 8 years of experience so I would think that I could find something even if it wasn't my choice of jobs. Any input that anyone has would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hey ManFromMissouri
I have a friend that lives in Cape G.
My husband is in IT, he put his resume on monster and got or I should say I got 14 phone calls in 2 days mostly from headhunters but they said they had both perm & contract.
You might try that
I also heard form a neighbor that Fidelity was hiring in IT

More jobs than many parts of the country but not as many as Tampa, Orlando, WPB and Miami. Contract jobs should be easily obtainable here as opposed to perm.

Yes, lots of law firms. Law firms, insurance companies, banks...these are big employers in Jax. Rogers Towers is a big one.

Well based strictly on my observations and experience, while the IT job pool may be relatively small for a metropolitan area, the qualified candidate pool is even smaller. If you have experience and are good, you should have multiple offers to choose from. I have more than 20 years experience as a Software Engineer and received multiple offers based only on telephone interviews; I also found the companies more than willing to pay.

Default retired software systems programmer

Hi,

I'm a semi retired IBM systems guy, but have an idea for an internet startup regarding small businesses and relational databases. I don't need capital, just need clever entrepreneurial types if you want to toss it around sometime.

GrayRunner, I have a strong background in Oracle and J2EE. Used to be a Mainframe System Programmer but chose Oracle and J2EE in order to get a job in the sunshine. Not too many Mainframes in warm climates. I'm interested in hearing your ideas.

grayrunner, i too have many years of experience in J2EE (Most recently, JSF, Hibernate, Spring, Maven, etc...). Although, I'm not looking to move to the area until Spring/early Summer of 2008. I'd also be interested in hearing your thoughts...
