I was wanting to take the kids to see all the navy ships they have at the mayport base. Is there some where you can go and see them? Anyone know what kinds of ships are there? We don't have to be really close or anything, just looking for a place we can see the ships from a distance if possible. Thanks for your help.

You can see some of them, from a distance, on a road that is near the Ferry and next to an old lighthouse. That is where we seen some. Other than that, I think you have to be near the St. John's River Inlet on a boat! Let me warn you though, there isn't much there to see as far as Naval ships go! I was in the Navy for some years (Viet Nam era) and I thought Mayport might be look like the San Diego Naval Station......not even close, I found out. It's a much smaller Naval Base than I thought it would be!

What about visiting Huguenot Beach/Park. It is only $1 per person but gets pretty full right now due to some closures. You can make a day of it-beach, ships, picnic???

Find someone in the Navy to take you on base to see the ships. There are sailors and their spouses all over the city.

There are a bunch of Frigates and Cruisers in port all the time, and there are Helicopter squadrons there that fly every day. If you get lucky you can see some jets from other bases doing touch-and-go's. Kids love that military sight seeing. Good luck!
