Our upcoming relocation, initially set for Tampa area, has been expanded to include choice of Tampa or Jacksonville.

Unfortunately, we really don't know much about either area.

Can anyone familiar with the two provide thoughts on this choice? Pros and cons of each? Housing, transportation, costs, and other factors?

Thanks very much.

It's a question that comes up often on this forum.

I would suggest starting here to read some of our earlier responses:

In short, Tampa is a larger market and has most everything that comes with being considered a "big" city. Jacksonville is more like a mid-sized city and generally considered more family-friendly.

Jacksonville has more rednecks. Tampa has more old people. Jacksonville is more like south Georgia, and Tampa is more... not quite Miami. I'd have a hard time deciding as I love both places! You should visit both places first before you decide. I think Jacksonville is more laid back. Tampa is more dense. Jacksonville is very spread out. The cost of living is probably a little bit cheaper in Jacksonville, but not by much. I interned in Tampa & grew up in St. Augustine. I found Tampa to be more Florida...meaning it fit into the stereotypes people outside of Florida have. Tampa seemed a little more style conscious. I *think* Jacksonville is a little more diverse.

Sorry! I guess it doesn't work when I link to a search? If you search this forum (Jacksonville) using the keyword "Tampa", you'll come up with all the Tampa threads with the most recently replied ones first.

The 2 cities are very similar in a lot of ways. There are some differences, but I find them to be subtle. You have the Ocean vs the Gulf, for one. The weather is slightly different, as is hurricane vulnerability (a little worse in the Gulf). Housing prices are a bit higher in Tampa.
