Does anyone have suggestions for good high schools that accept the McKay Scholarship? I'm looking ahead to 2010/2011 school year. He really wants to attend BK, but I don't know if I can swing the tuition.

My son receives McKay for speech, but no longer needs the speech-related coaching. A good school with strong college prep curriculum is what I am looking for. He is doing very well academically. He will be applying to Stanton and Paxon, but I know that there are many that will be doing so, as well.

It seems that most of the high schools on the McKay list are not credentialed and/or are a little more extreme, religion-wise, than we are looking for.

Does anyone have experience with the Foundation Academy of Jacksonville? Other ideas?

Thank you!

Is the reason he no longer needs the speech-related coaching is because the school or district already knows you know about the McKay Scholarship option for your son? Curious.

He is using it now and it continues as long as he is in private school.

I know for certain Eagle's View Academy offers the McKay scholarship. It's off I-95, so depending where in town you live it would be easy access. However it is on the Westside, and a majority of the students are deep into hunting/fishing/mudding, so it may be a culture shock like it was for me when I was younger... More like living in rural GA then the Ponte Vedra vibe of BK. Teachers are great and education is nothing to worry about.

Thank you umich, I will check it out. I'm sure that he would love to have friends into hunting, mudding and fishing. (What is mudding, BTW?! It sounds like a dirty sport, so he would probably love doing it with friends. And he hasn't had an opportunity to hunt or fish. He's always wanted to fish. Not sure about hunting.)

Logistics may pose a problem, as my GD will need to be picked up at Hendricks (Univ. & Beach area). I had to go into work half an hour early and take a late lunch to pick them up last year. I tried letting them take a city bus home and it took more than 2.5 hours. I have a part time job and will have to do the math- increasing PT hours worked on weekends VS using the McKay to defray cost of tuition at BK VS going in 1.5 hours early to get him to Eagle and then picking him up. I had it relatively easy this year, as a mom took them to school and I took her son home in the afternoon.

Man, it's always a juggling act to have kids! But you can't put a dollar value on a good education. Why hasn't the magic wand been invented yet?!
