How are the hospitals? Any good children's hospitals? My daughter who is now 6 had a brain tumor when she was 3. We actually almost lost her. She suffered a traumatic brain injury due to it and the surgery to remove it. She has ongoing care for this. We have an excellent Children's Hospital here in Rochester named Strong. She has numerous doctors that she still has to see regularly. Here is the list: Neurosurgeon, twice a year, Orthopedic specialist, at least twice a year for her braces (she has mobilty difficulties now), a Endocrinologist, A specialized in children with disabilities Pediatric Dentist, Her regular Pediatrician, has to be a female (more comfy for her), and has to be a good one. Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapist.
Any suggestions?
Anyone have a child with a disability and namely if you have a child with a TBI (traumatic brain injury), how is the services(DDSO, Developmental Disabilty Services Organization, or do you even have one there), and the school systems with dealing with IEP's and such??? Any specific area of Jax I should target in as far as the hospitals and schools go?
Any and all info is much appreciated and welcomed.......
Thanks alot!
~Lu

Give your daughter a big hug for me, sounds like she is a special little girl who has fought some amazing battles. Sounds like she has a pretty amazing Mom also
We have Wolfson Children's Hospital. This is an amazing childrens hospital, I did a major volunteer project there and was really impressed.

Hi there. In a prior post, I mentioned Cunningham Creek Elementary for you to look into for your daughter. It's a part of the St. John County school district. Here's the link for the ESE programs that might be applicable:
http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/depts/ese/ESE%20Programs
Our children have been in the St. Johns county schools for the past 5 years and we've been very pleased with them.

In our area of St. Johns, there is a group called "Mothers Against Brain Injury" (http://www.mabii.org/) (broken link). I believe it was started by a local mom after her child suffered a brain injury. It may be a resource for you.

Hope this is helpful to you. Best of luck to you and your family!

-Susan

Wow! That's really good information! Thanks so much! Yes, I remember the schools you mentioned. Do you know more about this Children's Hospital also? How far is it from the St. John's area? Can you also give me some zip codes to use for researching? So appreciate it! I am going to check out that group too. That sounds like an awesome way to start finding good doctors and therapists!

Oh no! The website link to the Mother's Against Brain Injury site says it no longer exists or something like that......I hope its just my web browser being silly right now. Anyway, I think I'll try to do a general search for it by typing it in the search field. Wish me luck!

LuLu,

There's a Jacksonville & NE FL Healthcare Guide that might help (like a big phone book, but all health-related).

You can download it or get a copy on CD-ROM from:

heritagepublishinginc.com

I'm not sure if they'll try to charge for it though...they have free book copies in the local libraries here...maybe they'll ship you a book for free?

p.s. This is the same group that prints the Jacksonville Relocation guide - ask them to send you one of those too (they also do a legal guide, etc.)

Default Thank you for the Mothers Against Brain Injury info! :)

I want to thank you for giving me this information and I've found the correct website, it seems they had moved so the link is: http://www.mabii.org
Very helpful. I have gathered so much information here! Much more than just from using search engines alone. I must say, that the info I've received from you folks along with all the searching I've done, I feel armoured with knowledge! I am no longer uneasy about the move and trying to get everything organized and put into place for my little girl! I know some of my questions may have been silly but I really needed to know more than what I was getting by just looking stuff up, ya know? I told my hubby, I can't take the winters here but if I can't get my daughter the services she needs we just can't go, that's all there is to it. I actually found that there is alot of support and services for her and her service coordinator here is going to help us as well. My husband is working with a recruiter right now. We hope to find the oppurtunity he's looking for and be moved down there with jobs and a home not long after school gets out here for the summer. We will be going down for a short visit also. I am going through my store's hiring hotline to transfer my job down to Jax too. It will depend on where we're living which one I'll work at though. Everything looks to be falling into place slowly but surely. I just want to thank everyone who has helped me out here. As I have been coming to this site for a few weeks now, I can't help but venturing off into other forums like WV where I grew up and in the Books, Movies, and Music forum. I don't want to become an "addict" however, I find it's just plain old fun here. I hope to talk with you all more frequently!
Got to go do some more searching......lol
Thanks again,
Lu
