My husband and I are considering purchasing some property in North Jacksonville near HWY 17 and just south of Nassau County. Anyone live up there and have opinions about quality of life?

This would eventually be where we build our home to live with children (we don't have any yet). Any comments or suggestions or comments welcome.

It depends on what you're looking for.

Right now that area is surprisingly rural, especially considering its relative proximity to downtown and the airport. Yulee is nearby, so there's a bit of a rural/redneck/backwoods stigma about the area. Depending on the property's specific location, you might be near parts of the Timucan Preserve, so that could be a plus.

However, be very clear that this area is the suburb of the future for Duval County. It might take 15 or 20 years due to the downturn, but it's coming. Look at googlemaps for that area. Basically everything that isn't colored green for the Timucan Preserve will eventually be filled up with subdivisions and business/industrial parks. The long range master plans are crystal clear that this will happen.

So yeah, it's a weird combination for a long term move, honestly. You have to be happy with rural now - but okay with the fact that it will eventually turn into suburbia.

Do you think some parts will ever be bought out by big developers? I'm so worried that I could get forced out of my little piece of rural heaven by greedy developers.
