I am driving through Jax next Friday and back Monday 10-23 and 10-26 from Savannah to Ormond Beach and back to Charlotte.

(a) I am guessing going around downtown is preferable than going through, but which direction is less trafficy? East toward ocean or west away from ocean

(b) rough times of rush hours in the am? I am planning on leaving Savannah by 9:00 so that shouldn't be too much problem, but Monday, since I have to come all the way back to Charlotte, I probably will leave earlier from Ormond.... guesstimate 7:30 8:00ish, putting me in Jax 9:45-10:00 ish?!?!? could I leave a little earlier and still avoid major gridlock?

thanks for all your help!

You'll hit some traffic, but not enough in my opinion to use 295/ 9a. Just make sure your iPod is fully loaded and enjoy the views of downtown. The traffic is mild in this town compared to other large cities.

I lived in Atlanta for a while. There is no traffic in this town worth mentioning. Stay on I-95 unless there is a wreck shutting down lanes then you could take 9A east toward the beach, not Orange park to go around.

I battled ATL traffic for toooooooo many years, that's why I try to scope out any traffic problems before I leave and since I will not have my 'puter with me (true vacation away from all contact points from work) I wanted to check early enough to plan.

thanks for the advice, I'll shoot straight through.

Taking 295 south then 9A south connecting 95 South would be nice. If you're taking the downtown route, the traffic pattern is ever changing so WATCH OUT for the signs. I doubt any GPS or maps are updated since the recent change. You only get some traffic between 7am~9am and 4pm~6pm.

travelingfood makes a good point about GPSs and all the changes on I-95, especially where I-10 bears off. Just the other day I took I-10W from I-95 and my GPS got all confused and didn't have a clue where I was - it told me to take the Copeland St exit, then quickly changed its mind and said to continue on I-10W.

So, if traveling with a GPS, be aware it might get temporarily confused.
