*** I have seen this a couple of times at most recently on a post here... can anyone tell me about this "New Springfield" and what are its borders?

***Also, on the entertainment venue - has anyone been to 9th and Main? How is that place on a Friday and Saturday night? Did you enjoy the atmosphere?

***I have seen a few neighborhood markets around... who runs those places? Are they local people? What kind of foods can be found? Are these places ok or are they run-down?

Sorry about all the questions. I just didn't want to create 3 different threads. You guys have all been great!

Han

- 9th & Main is nomore. It went out of business last year due to poor managament. The owner, Craig Van Horn, was in over his head. He also owned a lot of other property in the area which are in limbo right now as well. A lot of property on the Eastside 8th Street in Springfield are his that he panned to renovate/develop, but when he went under all of his holdings are were frozen more or less.

Specifically about the old 9th & Main, i believe he's letting someone rent out the space right now and calling it "Karlene's Jazz" or something like that. Of course, the rent money doesn't go to Van Horn, it goes to the city. However, it's a stall tactic b/c the city can't physically claim the property while a tenant is in there. None of the signage has changed on the outside however, and altough I havene't astopped by, i'd bet the the quality of food/entertainment is not very high.

It's too bad. 9th & Main used to be THE spot to be for lunch & dinner.

- New Springfield: Metro Jacksonville | Covering Jacksonville FL, Northeast Florida, Jacksonville Transit, History, Neighborhoods

That's all the info you asked for at the link, including a good map. You can see the Historic Springfield is just below it (12th Street is the border). While Historic Springfield is just fine, New Springfield is not. It is not surprising on any day or night of the week to hear that someone was shot in that area.

- i'm not sure what you mean by "markets"? convenience stores? farmers markets?

if you mean convenience stores, then most are not worth going into at all. they either (a) total pieces of crap (b) uncooperative with police and neighborhood organizations in having a postive impact (ie, they sell drug items, let known active criminals hang out there, don't let police question people on thier property, etc) or (c) ok management, but still not asthetically nice.

The best one as far as good people and not being a total dump is on the corner of Market & 3rd. They've changed what they carry somewhat to refelct the changing clientele (it's on a nice street).

I guess they are "convenience" stores - I appreciate your input on this.

So the area of 9th and Main is not a bad place, I assume, and the more south between Pearl and Walnut, the better(?)

Thanks for the link - great info!

No, it just depends. There are very nice areas North of 8th Street. Pockets of beautiful streets mixed in with one's that need rehab.
