Karla... That's a great idea to pick a weekend and go explore! I will certainly try that. And yes, I will stay connected to the forums throughout my adventure. Thanks, all! :-)

Dawn,

You'll be fine in Mandarin. FSU gave you a very nice comprehensive list. Much of what he covered is just north of where you'll be living so you can get to some of these places in 15-20 minutes or so.

The Grotto in San Marco is one of my favorite "chill" spots, you should definitely check it out.

Be sure to grab a free Folio Weekly newspaper, they're all over town. It's one of the best resources for finding out what's going on.

I have just picked up a Folio with a disturbing cover story "why it sucks to get raped in Jacksonville" which isn't too comforting for a woman here alone. :-/. Anyway, I did check it out and it did have a lot of good info. I've been to a few places already. I've only gotten takeout because I don't know anyone yet, but I've tried Picasso pizza (delicious!), bonefish (just okay), pf changs (just okay), burrito gallery (yuck - chipotle and even qdoba is better IMO). I will try some places that have been suggested here tomorrow-Saturday. I think tomorrow I will brave going to a sportsbar and watching Texas v alabama. Any good places to watch games?

Thanks for everyone's help... You've been great. So far, I like it here. Everyone (with the exception of my neighbor) has been very friendly! :-)
