Well it looks like we will be making a bid on a SRG house on Sunday, and I know of one other family that is making a bid this coming week as well. We are going to have a Benjamin model built hopefully somewhere on 3rd and not too far from Main. I plan on becoming one of the "cheerleaders" soon and see if I can help out the neighborhood.

You'll be a Westsider.

I'm an Eastsider.

That means we'll be on opposing teams during the 2010 Thanksgiving morning "Turkey Bowl".

Let the psychological warfare begin.

Actually I will be on the eastside won't I? I will be a couple streets back from Uptown. Lisa Simon and Tony already were giving me grief about it LOL.

I told them that I could be bribed into getting a lot on the Westside if got a good deal. I heard they need some pitching. I was being looked at by Georgia Tech back in high school before rushing as fast as I could to make a child! LOL. So off to the Navy I went

Exactly! I mean, are we supposed to believe Springfield has done a complete 180 from Cracktown to Disney? Little white children skipping down the block with their frilly white anklet socks??

Sorry, but I'd be more than a bit perturbed at Southern Living if I was a Springfield resident right now. It's the worst depiction of gentrification. Springfield residents of course had no control over what made it into print so nothing to do but make the best of it.

All the best to those who are willing to meet the challenges of living in a neighborhood struggling with transition. It's a risk and hopefully there's a enough of a payoff in the future.

Aside from the whiteflight/gentrification comments, I am curious about the topic originally brought up in this thread. Not having a quality grocery store in the neighborhood is inconvenient at best. What about all the other day-to-day needs? Do Springfielders need to travel to Riverside for most items?

If so, that brings up another question. If Springfield is urban, is it walkable? One of our members recently reintroduced the Walkscore in a thread. So what score does a typical home in Springfield get?

"Little white children skipping down the block with their frilly white anklet socks??"

- no, it was CGI. (ha). ummm......are they not allowed to go to church & skip afterwards? I don't understand....

"Not having a quality grocery store in the neighborhood is inconvenient at best."

- did you miss the first page of the thread? the winn-dixie is a quality grocery, some of thier clientele turns some people off though. (ie, sometimes homeless come in to shop)

"What about all the other day-to-day needs? Do Springfielders need to travel to Riverside for most items?"

- Such as banking, dry cleaners, food marts, hardware, pharmacy, IT professionals, dentist, optomitrist, medical specialists, schools, parks, dog park, museums, bike shops, auto repair, car wash, appliance repair, coffee shops, upscale & casual bars, deli, sit-down restaurants, fast food, vintage clothing, antique shops, gas, schools, appliance repair, animal rescue, uniform shop?

You mean those kinda other day-to-day needs?

The only things i can think of where i'd HAVE to go more than 2 miles away are a florist/garden store (which may be coming to Main Street soon from what i hear), a Vet, and a place that sells new retail clothing (ie, jeans or something).

A musical instrument store and art supply store would be great too. But those aren't common anywhere.

"If Springfield is urban, is it walkable?"

- Very. Most of the oldest neighborhoods are, as they were designed for walking and not cars (ie, sidewalks everywhere, narrower roads, closer to commerical).
