Also, this may sound silly, but I have no idea how the magnet schools work. Do you have to apply and take a test to get in? Is there a lottery? We come from an area with a great public school system so we have never had to consider other options.
The new high school is said to be opening in 2010.

The boundaries are going to be redrawn, so kids will be pulled from all areas to go to this new school. Some of the kids that currently go to Mandarin, Sandalwood, Tery Parker (and Englewood, I think?) will attend this new high school. I read also that new elementaries and middle schools are to follow (sounds like some will be in this very same area...there's a large expanse of land here).

The Magnet program is done by application and lottery...not sure about testing. The kids still attend a Duval public school, but are on a Magnet track inside of the school. There are Magnet programs for the arts (there is an art track that starts at elementary level and tracks into Douglas Anderson School for the Arts), Math, Language, etc.

Here's a link to the program:

Wow, that was a great website with all of the information. Thanks Riveree!
It sounds like it might be pretty tough to get into Stanton College prep. No way to make sure your kids get in. I think I would rather make sure we find a house with "A" schools to begin with .

Yes, Stanton College Prep is tough to get into. One of the Magnet programs at the Jax Beach Elementary (not sure of exact school name) is tracked to go into Stanton, BUT the child still has to qualify.

Searching for the "A"-rated neighborhoods will certainly be a good fallback even if you do pursue the Magnet program.

Default Consider Camden County, Ga

Something else you may want to consider is Camden County, Ga. We are the first exit over the state line. Technically we are closer to the Jacksonville airport than alot of people living in Jacksonville. My husband flies in and out every week for his job so proximity to a major airport is important to him.

Camden County schools have all gotten excellent reviews. Due to the navy base up here and each school benefiting from federal impact funds the schools are well funded. They have a good gifted program for 4th grade and up. My daughter just finished 5th grade and loved it. The high school and the middle school in St. Marys are brand new and they are in process of building a new elementary school in St. Marys.

We have plenty of restaurants, shops, etc and are close to all those new ones located near the airport. There are a plenty of kid activites, sports etc. We have a movie theater, water park, state parks, etc.

Since we have not had the hurricane problems in Georgia we don't have the high homeowner insurance rates that they pay just 5 minutes down the interstate in Florida.

You can get a very nice house for the $300k range. In fact the ones in my neighborhood are going for less than $200K for a 2000+ square foot.

We have lived here for 17 years and it is a nice town to raise a family. If you want more info don't hesitate to e-mail me at glitterbugs@tds.net.

Tammy

Hi,
I am in the Ft. Caroline area of Jax and I am very happy here. I have 2 small children and feel very safe. The neighborhoods are more established here and it is only 15 minutes to the beach on the Wonderwood expressway. With the market the way it is right now you can buy alot of home for 300-350. I also enjoy not having to fight the southside traffic everyday

Dianowen,

For the best feedback, begin your own seperate thread, otherwise your inquiry is likely to get lost .

For a quick response though, I would say look right in the immediate vicinity of FCCJ (Florida Community College of Jacksonville) in zip code 32246. I live in this area (called "Intracoastal West") and it is safe, super-convenient to everything (including the beach), and very nice .

Take a look at the link below for St Johns County schools:
www.stjohns.k12.fl.us
I live in Julington Creek Plantation as well and have never regretted the move from Jacksonville. My husband works in Jacksonville and we go to church there. By accessing SR 13 we have access to the Mandarin area of Jacksonville in 2 minutes or less. NW St Johns County gives you the best of both worlds (great schools, family community and quick access to Jacksonville).
