I think with online shopping, no tax, and free shipping in most cases, department stores don't have the same draw as before . e.g., I buy my shirts online.

Online shopping has played a part, yes, but that's all fairly recent. You used to be able to spend a whole day at a department store, back when they had real departments. Now most of them are just two-level clothes stores. Discount stores like Kmart, Target, and especially Walmart siphoned away lots of business, especially the sale of hard merchandise, like electronics and housewares.

Thanks, ferret111! I had left the State before all of this took place.

Gayfers was "the" store in Tallahassee back when I was in High School there. IIRC, they were a Mobile institution?

Strange thing I remember from my time in Orlando, there were Robinson's there that converted to Maison Blanche & THEN Gayfers. Talk about musical stores.

On a separate note, I spent some time in Jax with the Navy, and as of the late '70's, Downtown still had May-Cohen's, Ivey's, Furchgott's, JCPenney & Sears. Sad to see the demise of the Downtown Dept. stores in almost every city in the country. Now they are the exception.

Just thought I'd mention that Forever XXI is moving into the vacated Belk location at the Avenues...the space that was originally implied as being the location for the new Macy's.

forever xxi is store that caters to young people, lots of tweens. but also attracts women that are their thirties that want to dress like they are 21. my GF (35) drug me into that store a couple of weeks ago and i thought my head was going explode from the lady gaga blasting and wall to wall teenagers running around in there. the clothes are cheap though, like old navy. quality AND pricewise.

Thanks for the info. Think I'll pass on that one. So much for Macy's. Robyn

Shouldn't the OP or Mod update the title already? Even simply changing the "!" to "?" would do.

Now what would really be cool was if Macys was to fill in a vacant building downtown. They dont always have to be apart of a mall or strip...I think one could stand alone. Are there any like that now?

I think there's a downtown Macy's in Miami. I think it's in their Lincoln Road district in the old Burdines building. That's the only example I can think of in Florida.
