Sorry all. Know this doesn't relate to this forum but can't seem to find a medical blog out there. Has any cigarette smoker had surgery lately? I'm headed in next month for ankle surgery.
The doc's keep telling me I need to quit at least four weeks before the procedure and I'm having a rough time with it. Is smoking and surgery as bad as the doc's make it sound? I know smoking isn't good and I've gone from almost 2 packs a day to 3 packs a week but having a real hard time quiting all together. Any responce would be well appreciated. Thanks!!!
Please send me an e-mail at "a.hagg@yahoo.com" Thaks again!!

The problem with smoking after surgery is delayed healing and (if we're talking about bone surgery) failure of bones to heal and/or fuse. Your feet already have a limited blood supply (compared with areas closer to your heart) and smoking results in vasoconstriction (reduction in the diameter of blood vessels) and reduced oxygen and nutrients to the surgical site. Your surgeon is being honest with you, and a failed surgery might be a lot worse than no surgery. 1/2 pack a day is too much.

I think jmcalli covered it. You really do need to quit before having any surgery like this. However, I sympathize with the difficulty in quitting. I've gone from 2-3 packs a day to just under half a pack a day over the last several months (having bronchitis helped on the cutting down tremendously). Unfortunately, that last step of giving it up completely is proving to be difficult, to say the least. I could come up with all sorts of excuses for it, but it really comes down to the fact that enjoy smoking tremendously and haven't gathered the will power to quit yet.
