Not only that, but it's now scaring me into thinking maybe I should sell this 2004 3.0 X-type.
BTW.....mine is a 2004.25 and the automatic transmission is a sealed unit.
So far the only problems I've had at all with the car is that I hate how they use the same wires in the rear glass for the radio antennae and the defroster (can't listen to the radio with the rear defroster on without static), a passenger door handle linkage rod came undone (I fixed that easily myself), and my car "lost" it's memory once for no reason that they could find which required the EMC to need re-flashed. My extended warranty expired at the end of June. I also wasn't notified of that and didn't even know I could renew it???
Well, it turns out the year before mine was -notorious- for transmission trouble, and was in fact recalled for it. And yeah that was definitely something weird about the rear defrost vs. the stereo. You'd think an Alpine 6-speaker with subwoofer would at least get an isolated antenna.
As for it being a sealed unit, it really doesn't matter, as you can see by my situation. You're looking at 15 hours worth of labor, whether it's a $250 fly wheel or a $2000 torque converter, so you might as well just get the whole thing done, or don't get it done at all.
As for driving it til the transmission goes, Drover, no. You don't want to be passing someone on the highway at 65 MPH when your transmission drops. That would be one of those "BAD THINGS" [tm] that cause 8 miles of backup during rush hour until they can find a spatula big enough to scrape your remains off the guardrail.
However, you're right about Jag Rattle being an awesome Rock Band name.
I feel your pain. I've got an MB and the brake sticks to the rotor occasionally, they say I need a new front brake caliper. $2000. For one. Not including installation.
Someone told me it may just be rust on the piston. I'm hoping that's it.
I did that already. The guy who specializes in Jag repairs had a friend who specializes in rebuilds. He tried to hook me up but the rebuild guy wanted almost as much as the dealer. $4000, $5300..regardless, just not worth it to repair a 2003 car that no one would want to buy if I decided to sell it in a year. ESPECIALLY since that isn't the only thing wrong with it. Remember that crack in the manifold - that won't ever get better and will eventually need replacing. Plus I haven't had to replace anything on the exhaust yet and you -know- that's the next thing coming up. We're talking about a huge money sink at this point.

If it is the tranny, maybe you want to park it on a street somewhere in the north end of Hartford?
