How many PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT REFERENCES to you have that you really trust to say positive things about you if a potential employer would call them? Are you ever concerned at your Professional References would not return a phone call or bad mouth you? Have you been burned by a Professional Reference you thought you could trust before?

Hmm.... if I really needed to I could probably pull at least 20 different professional references out of my magic hat.

Just a few weeks ago I started getting my portfolios together for scholarship applications and emailed 12 people to see if I could get a reference...I got 9 of them to write me back with letters

No, I've never been burned or had anyone badmouth me.

"...Professional References would not return a phone call or bad mouth you? Have you been burned by a Professional Reference you thought you could trust before..."

Wouldn't you know that beforehand when you called to ask their permission to use their name?

I probably have about ten I rotate through, depending on the type of job I'm applying to. Three I use most, though. About half of them are also friends so I know they wouldn't say anything negative. I guess I wouldn't know if I'd been burned, but I don't think I have. But... how would you know?

Five. No. No.

If you have concerns about a person badmouthing you, then you shouldn't use them. Duh.

I don't have any. I can give them information about past employment, but I've been working my current job for more than five and a half years...and I know that former managers are no longer at two of the jobs I had before this one.

I can easily pull together 30 professional references. Good thing too, since I need to find a new job!

I did have a situation where I got burned. A had applied for an internal position, but in another office. A friend of mine knew the hiring manager. I did get offered the position, but my friend did tell me that they received a really bad reference from my current office, and discounted it only because it contradicted my performance reviews, and my friend (another reference) also gave me a good review.

It wasn't totally my fault. The review from my office was done by the management staff, and was out of my hands as far as providing a reference. It was also done because they "did not want to lose me."

Needless to say, it did not instill a sence of loyalty.
