I had an interview a few weeks ago, for a group home job. I filled out all the paperwork, and answered all their questions. I called them last week, they said I didn't get the job. So today I was told that the interviewer said I looked bored during the interview.

But I wasn't bored. I answered all the questions the best I could. This has happened a few times before. During one interview, the interviewer even said to me that I looked bored. But I wasn't.

Last year, I substituted at a middle school. The people that worked in the office said they would call me if they had any more work. Ultimately, the principal decides who they want to sub. Later I found out that the principal didn't want me back because someone thought I was texting during class when I wasn't. They also said that I "wasn't engaging with the students." I never got the chance to defend myself and tell them my side of the story. That could have been a good opportunity for me.

I feel like I always mess up my opportunities, so now I'm behind other people my age. I've held about 15 different jobs since college ended in 2007. Most of those jobs have been temporary. Most of my friends have stayed in one or two places and got experience. Right now, I'm looking for work (again). The fields that I want to get into (television, music industry, magazine publishing, film), are so competitive to get into. I've had numerous internships and interviews for jobs in the field. At one internship, I was told because I am Black, I would have a hard time breaking into the field.

My family keeps telling me to hustle, but it's not easy. They told me to take any job. I didn't know how hard it was going to be. I might be getting a temporary retail job soon, not sure. I've told friends I'm looking for work, but they don't have openings at their jobs. I'm about to stop looking for work and go back to school and continue to freelance write. It's annoying when I see other people my age and they actually like their jobs. I always feel like I'm settling.

Maybe you want to practice interviewing with friends or family and get some feedback.

I remember interviewing at a company years ago and was told by the HR person to be "upbeat", they wanted someone "upbeat" I answered the questions and was pleasant, but I wasn't going to tell jokes....LOL. Didn't get the position, it was office work so I don't get what they were looking for.

Yeah, been there done that - interviewing is kind of a damned if you and damned if you don't thing.......I remember laughing at one when asked if I thought I could pass a drug screening (I have never done ANY drugs) only to be told it was no laughing matter - sigh........I laughed because for me passing a drug test is a no brainer. I probably wouldn't have been happy there anyway = )

This post has me literally laughing out loud imagining Big Sol talking so his upper lip stays high enough so his teeth are always showing.

Truly hilarious.

That is so true. Years ago I had interviewed at Southern California Gas and it was a panel interview. The one who would have been my boss asked if I would like a cup of coffee and I declined.

He escorted me into a conference room and left.

Someone else asked if I would like some water, my throat was kind of dry so I said yes.

When the one who asked about the coffee came in to the conference room, he gave me a strange look. Like why did you turn down my coffee...LOL.

Right then and there I felt like I had made a mistake by turning down his coffee.

Try not to mock interview with friends or family-- see if THEY can get people who have experience interviewing people to interview you.

How you interact with friends and family can be VERY different than with a stranger. You are obviously giving off some kind of "vibe" when you interview. The fact that multiple people with no relation to the other have pointed this out really tells me you must be doing something during the interview that you may not even realize you are doing. You probably wouldn't do this in the presence of friends. It is vital that you really try to interview with strangers who will be prepared to give an honest assessment of how you come off.

Do you make eye contact? If the principal thought you were texting, I'm guessing your eyes were looking down at something. When you answer a person's question, you should look them directly in the eye, smile, and answer.

I do make eye contact, maybe they thought I sounded like I didn't want the job. That day when the prinicipal thought I was texting, the students were taking a test, and the teacher was sitting at her desk. The prinicipal wasn't in the room.
