How do they do a background check by phone?? (employment, interview, references)

I am so confused, the employment that I am trying to obtain, I have passed every interview and test, Now they tell me somone will be calling me for and over the phone background check. What do they ask you, or how is this done.

I am surprise no one has every had this done, I was hoping someone could answer my question.

They will probably ask you to provide names of references for them to contact.

Most background check matters are done in written form, but they may ask you to provide verbal responses to questions about criminal history or drug use, etc.
