Advertisements

Hi,

I am 21 years old, male, of east indian ethnicity. I am a permanent resident.

I have a high school diploma and some contract work experience working for an IT company. I was internal admin assistant, the work was legitimate, and required a certain amount of intelligence, creativity and ability, but how I got the work wasn't 'clean' - I knew the owner. I worked two 2 month contracts for them.

I'm looking to get a steady, stable job in something simple right now. Money is not the biggest issue at the moment, but for certain reasons I particularly wish to find a janitorial position. Graveyard shift on my own would be ideal, but I'm not in a position to be picky and will take anything.

I responded to craigslist and backpage ads, and put up an ad of my own. All the ads seemed phony, with me getting responses with 'job offers' as the first response mail, also asking me to bring my credit report to the interview..

I am in the DFW metroplex area. I haven't found any such positions in the dallas morning news classifieds. Today I left voicemails for a few janitorial companies, indicating my interest and willingness to work for a month as a trial/training period without pay. I hope something comes of it.

But would generally appreciate pointers, especially on landing a job of this kind. Where do I look? How do I know when the openings are? Are there employment agencies for this kind of work, I can't find any..

I also applied online to Mcdonalds, Burger King, Petsmart, and Tom Thumb, not to mention a bunch of at home cleaning and painting kind of ads from craigslist and backpage without any success so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Many staffing agencies have 'general labor' divisions that could help you find this type of work.

One hurdle may be that your resume reflects 'white collar' work, while you are looking for 'blue collar' work. Most employers will assume you will become dissatisfied with the work pretty quickly, and are hesitant to hire someone who would have such poor longevity.

Regardless of your location or industry, it takes pretty much everyone a long time to find a job these days, so you need to be prepared for a long search.

I want a janitorial job too, that way you can listen to audio while at work and get some moderate exercise. I think it's easier to get a job where less people go to, like being a cashier/bagboy in a small grocery store.

You might want to go into a few office buildings and speak with the Property Management Company and ask them who they have contracted for their cleaning service. They should be able to get you in contact with the cleaning service. Also, most offices have their offices cleaned at night so that might work out well for you.

Good luck!

Not just office buildings - try schools (including local universities), hospitals, government buildings - everything needs to be cleaned, and a lot of places don't use outside cleaning companies.

If you've immigrated here legally and you're in Dallas, you've got a big hurdle. A whole lot of Dallas companies prefer to hire illegals at less than legal wages and as long as they can get by with it, that's what they'll do.

Your English is too good. If I were you, I'd look in cities other than Dallas, go where there aren't very large populations of illegals. And go for management positions in the janitorial fields. You're too literate not to do so.

Well, in the words of Kumar (Harold and Kumar), just because your hung like a horse doesn't mean you should do porn.

Consider this a little like lester burnham's situation in American Beauty - I'm looking for the least responsibility possible, the least intellectual and managerial work, and the most simple and honest. I'm trying to take a step back.

That's understandable - but you still have to accept that you're not in the right city for that kind of work.

One of the problems with the low skilled jobs is that anyone in the world can simply pack up and come here to take those jobs. You're having to compete with every Central and South American for those jobs. At least find a city where you'd be employable.

Hi everyone,

I am an exchange student at Schulich Business School. For my marketing research class, I need to do a survey asking graduate students how they’ve found their first job. I need as many answers as possible and as quickly as possible. It only takes 5 minutes, and I would be very grateful if you could help me! Thank you very much!
