Do employers hold it against you for applying to more than one position? (positions, qualified)

I had applied 3 wks ago for a position at Time Warner Cable. I applied for another position today with TWC and then, later in the day, I got my rejection email for the first position I applied for. Just seems ironic to me. Is this the new common practice for employers?

As a former manager- I didn't hold it against people who applied for more than one position, as long as you are qualified for all of the positions you apply for.
