It's usually as simple as that.....they picked someone they felt was BETTER....as far as asking.....it wont do you ANY good, unless you pick the dumbest interviewer in history.....ANYthing they tell you opens them for a lawsuit of some type.....
Sometimes they will I received a call from someone that was rejected for a position....he DEMANDED to know why he wasn't selected....I told him we went with someone that we felt was more suitable.....again he DEMANDED to know WHY we did that.....
SO I told him......I didn't like your atitude because it was JUST LIKE your atitude right now.
I then called the department that i had FORWARDED his application to and suggested that they might NOT want him afterall.
SInce you have a prior history with company I see the rational in asking why you were not hired back. Otherwise, I do not advocate calling employers who do not contact you. You just have to move on and keep searching.
Unless you lied on your resume and they found out or you failed a background check (such as lying about a crime or having really awful references), they aren't going to tell you why you weren't chosen. When I used to ask, the common answer I received was "we went with someone else because we thought that person was a better fit". That said, there was one occasion in which the hiring manager approached me (this was for an internal interview) and he took me to a room and explained why he went with someone else. The hiring manager gave me all the reasons why this person was a better fit for the job than I was. He listed all the reasons and explained how this guy's experience made him a better fit. He also told me that guy brought a portfolio of his work (this job btw did not require a portfolio or anything) during the interview and that this won him over.
I once had a guy e-mail to say he went with someone else. He said he went with someone with a little more experience in that field. He did say he spoke with one of my refrences (a former boss in the same industry) and said he had very good things to say about me.
This was unsolicited as I never called or wrote to ask why I didn't get the job.
If you were one of a handfull of people interviewed and they did not call you back to touch base and tell you why you weren't chosen, they can stick it where the sun don't shine. Cut your losses and move on...
