And how important is title? I had 5 positions in 11 years at the same company and was trying to show the last 3 were "progressive." But my job titles don't necessarily look progressive, they are just corporate speak which mean different things to different people. And one time my role shifted but title stayed the same. Finally, does progression matter if the end-title or function doesn't really exist at other companies?

Also, I was thinking that some promotions aren't really warranted and other people do great work but don't get promoted so new company wouldn't take this at face value anyway.

We always like to see a steady progression of responsibilities. If we see someone applying for a senior accountant roll and they have been doing that same thing for the last ten years it doesn't look good. The main reason being we always have the expectation that people we hire will progress up the chain.

As an employer I'd be interested in briefly seeing the "upgrading" but more interested in seeing how and why the upgrade resulted in more job responsibility and how that worked out.

Oh great, I thought I showed increased role but now that I look at it, it's probably confusing. I guess if I had a nice neat career I wouldn't need more than one resume version but I'm up to 5. I guess I have to work on differentiating roles. thanks
