I am a middle aged man who is working but always interested in interviewing for a better job and on occasion job hunt but recently my experiences interviewing have not been so good!

As a middle aged man I am always concerned about age discrimination so I was really shocked when I had a phone interview and the first questions were:

"What year did you graduate from High School?"

"OK, then, what is your college graduation date?"

This was asked by a representative of a large highly respected organization in Fairfax VA just west of Washington DC.

What would you say if you were asked this and were over 40 years old? (I have to assume they ask the question because the age of the applicant is very important to the hiring process.)

If you want the job I would answer the question honestly.

It could be a misguided attempt to determine that you did graduate, by testing you with the year question. Unfortunately for them, it's also evidence that could be used in an age discrimination lawsuit, since they could not tell your age by looking at you in a phone interview. I'd suggest telling the truth, though, since they would most likely verify the dates before hiring anyway.

If it really bothers you, you could just say: "I certainly can understand why you are asking that question, in your field you probably do get applicants who attended but did not complete their degrees. I can assure you I did complete my degree with XYZ University and I will be glad to provide copies of my diploma and transcripts if needed during the candidate evaluation process.....I sure don't want to put you at any risk of asking an illegal question by providing a specific year, however....I know you don't want that problem and you simply need confirmation of every candidate's qualifications. I will most certainly provide that."

Now I'm not saying this is the best answer, but it might be the best answer for you if responding truthfully really troubles you.....

I realize there are probably no jobs available as a "Professional Forum Threadstarter" but surely your sheer stamina and productivity in that sphere must translate to some field where age wouldn't be an issue. Creative writing perhaps? Even if nothing comes of that then obviously honesty is the best policy in any interview situation. Since you have mentioned before that HR is your field I'm not sure why such questions would "shock" you.

Usually it's a publicly funded day care center for older teens.

I would make fun of the question by saying: "Are you asking me how old I am?" Then see what he/she says. Likely he/she will just drop the question and move on.
