I went on an interview with a small CPA firm a couple of years ago and the partner asked me a.) which book I read last and b.) my favorite vacation destination. I almost started laughing.
By the end of the interview I had the guy ADMITTING that they have a horrible turnover rate. He said that they were replacing about half of their staff accountants and do this every year. It was pretty obvious as there was a line of young guys in suits out in the lobby waiting to be interviewed.

If I had somebody ask me that in an interview, I'd tell them that my last book I read was Das Kapital and my favorite vacation destination was Cuba, and I'd be saying that with a deadly serious expression. The look on the guy's face would be one to remember for a lifetime, can you imagine??...LOL.
Maybe then they'd stop asking such stupid and irrelevant questions...hehe.

And, just your luck, the interviewer would be possessed of considerably more brain matter than you gave him credit for and would in all sincerity ask you salient questions about the book and ask what parts of Cuba you visited and how you enjoyed your visit there. Which face, what look?

I have been asked questions like the one's you have mentioned and I just try to answer it with a straight face. Seriously, what's the point? What are you trying to get out of me by asking a question like that?
It angers me to see how employers behave these days. I'm an undergrad business student and have had internship interviews with large corporations that dominate their industry and I can't tell you how many times I was asked to take a seat and looked around while my interviewer was busy sending a text/email message or stopped me so he/she could answer the phone...in front of me without saying excuse me or stepping outside!
Really? Un-freaking believable!

That really is very short sighted for several reasons:
1 - In the field I work in, it is a very small world. The inconsiderate nature in which I was handled by HR by lack of contact makes me not want to EVER work for these companies again. You never know if a year or two from now, you will have new hiring managers who want to pursue me. Believe me, its happened before, and I've ignored their calls/emails due to how I was treated in the past.
2 - I have a lot of professional contacts in my field. Believe me, I talk. I tell a lot of my friends how unprofessional their HR is, and have influenced many others not to apply for roles at these companies.
3 - I am very adept at social media/blogging. I frequently use blog sites such as Glassdoor and I have provided negative feedback on companies that I've interviewed with before, when the experience was less than professional.

I can't tell you how many interviews I've gone on where the interviewer is LATE. I'm talking 30 minutes late.
Yet if you show up even one minute late you are disqualified.

Or they look unprofessional in worn clothes, old clothes, horrible attire while you are expected to be neat, clean, perfect hair, nails, you know.
If you don't get the job, it MUST be you blinked 2 times and coughed once.
Stare politely with rapt attention but not too much at the interviewer as he proceeds to eat his lunch, talk in the phone, and zone out while asking what color is your parachute?

I had a interview for a clerical position for company that sells tarps for dump trucks... The guy interviewing me was wearing jeans and I swear was on something cause he was just acting odd... 2 very odd questions in about how I organized my computer desk top and email I knew I wasnt interested.. So I played along and smiled politely but was very relived to get the heck out of there...
Then there was the job that a temp service sent me on and wasnt too clear about what the job was other than an assistant to the boss turned out to be some sort of marketing assistant and part time at that .. But figured it would be good experience even though I told the guy I had no marketing experience what so ever... Anyways we talk for a few then he pulls out a pad of paper and wants me to WRITE a paragraph about why I want the job and why they should hire.. First I have big bubbly handwriting secondly spell check is my best friend when Im trying to be professional... I had a Breakfast Club moment... You know at the end where they have to write a paragraph about who they think they are...(80s movie for all those that dont know) and honestly if I could of rememeber the lines to the movie I so would of done it. LOL
In the end I wrote for a bit told the guy I was done and we shook hands and I left.... Seemed like a ALOT of hoops to jump thru for a part time job that I so didnt want and would said no had I know it was part time..

Why is this wrong? You get paid to do a job, which consists of X,Y,Z. Anything above that performance, is nothing but charity for the business owner, because he surely isnt going to pay you for everything you do above and beyond, and likely will pay you for nothing you do above and beyond that he isnt required to by law.
The real problem business owners have with this generation is that they are less and less willing to turn over every card to the employer. If you pay $8 an hour, you will get a half illiterate who is not going to come in on his off day to fill a shift, is going to stand around when he isnt doing his minimum responsibilites, etc etc. That completely infuriates the employer.
