The real problem business owners have with this generation is that they are less and less willing to turn over every card to the employer. If you pay $8 an hour, you will get a half illiterate who is not going to come in on his off day to fill a shift, is going to stand around when he isn't doing his minimum responsibilities, etc etc. That completely infuriates the employer.

For the bold, I don't know if you are being sarcastic or serious but, you can't be further from the truth.
I worked in retail and made a few cents above minimum wage yet, I would work while I was at lunch when needed, frequently handled the cash register and the sales floor and running back and forth (while manager was on the phone with her girlfriends), offered to fill in for employees who took the day off numerous times.
My friend's friend's friend's and other people in my generation (I guess those born between 1986-1990) have a strong work ethic and do everything I mentioned plus more yet, are continually looked down upon by the older folks who somehow have this view that we are lazy and just want to coast through life.
And yet I was treated like crap which is why when I had enough, I quit. Needless to say, the store is struggling mighty and is very close to being shut down.

You got it. They emulate reality TV. They don't know what struggling really is.

You should see what they tell me. "We'll see" and I never hear back. "We are training a few people, I'll call you in a month", no hear back. Just an endless merry go round of BS.

The few people who are still dumb or trusting enough to believe that hard work and "giving that extra push" is going to get them any where, are quickly shown reality as you were. Your employer doesnt care about you in most cases, you are just an expense and a liability, not an asset.
Somewhere between the 70's and 80's, employees turned in to liabilities, rather then assets, and its taken employees another generation to catch on to that.

Many of us have worked hard, and sometimes gone the "extra mile" (or whatever one wants to call it) and have done pretty well for ourselves as a result.
Unfortunately, just as there are employers out there who recognize and reward such efforts, there are others who do not.

That was difficult for me to realize considering those who hardly did anything were easily promoted. After working retail, it does not surprise me why some of them struggle so much (e.g. Best Buy)

I've gotten to the point where I don't necessarily even want to go above and beyond because it means more stress without ever actually getting promoted or given a raise.
A sense of accomplishment and job well done doesn't pay the bills. At my last job our boss would push and push and push, and all of us employees worked HOURS off the clock, on the weekend and after hours to get jobs done because my boss had promised customers it could be done when in reality, it couldn't. You know what we got for all those extra hours and effort? More work. Two of us got laid off, one of us got replaced by the COO's girlfriend who had zero experience. Nobody got raises, and in fact, our health benefits got cut and the new plans had us paying 3x what we had the year before.
I think if employers treated their employees a little bit better, more would be apt to go above and beyond.

I have a friend going through this a second time.....with the same boss.
Promised the BIG promotion about three years ago.....killed himself working off the clock OT and weekends.
Job got done and the promotion went to ...the girlfriend.
Again working off the clock , hoping for the BIG promotion...
LOL... he's a believer .
I fall into the category of show me the money......
