Me: 25, single mother of 1. Enjoy Farmers Markets, Thrift Stores, trying new restaurants, swimming.

Job Offer 1: In a Large Metropolitan area in the SW, with a Government Contractor. Pay is 37K. Full Benefits.

Job Offer 2: In a SMALL, SMALL,SMALL town in the Rockies pay is 35K. NTE 1year 1 day term position with Federal Goverment (been told it will go to 4 years)

I want Job 1 for the location, I don't see myself happy in a small town. But I know a small town will be better for my child. As she will be in middle school in 18 months.

I also want Job 2 for the shot at getting into the Federal Retirement System. I was all set to go with Job 1, then I got offer 2. Now I am completely confused. I am a minority and worry about the lack of minorites where Job 2 is.

My question is: Should someone always take a Government Job, no matter what? Am I blowing a big chance by turning it down???

Depending on the metro area, I would debate a small town being better for a child. For instance, I would have given ANYTHING to have been raised in NYC.

Then consider all those poor kids in backwoods Kansas.

Lol - Well its Las Vegas. So, me being 25, you can see why I want to live there.

I probably will in the end. I just feel stupid turning down a Federal Job after 4 years of non-stop applying for them!

I am a retired Federal Employee and if it were me, I would pick #2. Most federal jobs tend to become permanent and getting your foot in the door is what's most important. After you become permanent you can apply for jobs in other places that you may want to live in. Just my opinion.

The contractors will be the first to be cut when budget demands and money will likely go further in a small town.

Since you have pretty much convinced yourself you do not want to live in a small town I would go with option 1.

However, something to consider...With the exception of a few die hard red-neck small towns, give the residents of small towns half a chance to get to know you and they will see you as a person and not a minority. Yes, it is hard to move to an area where none of your comfort things exsist. But over time you will develope new comfort things and maybe even turn the locals onto some of the things from your heritage.

If you take job one, Vegas is okay, but expensive to live there, going out is not cheap, and 35K in Vegas is low wages. I have lived in Vegas, it is hot, dusty. Contracting is a good job, I would not worry about being cut, as the military is cutting their civilian jobs, and contracting and outsourcing is huge now. Plus, you can apply for fed jobs, with the contracting expereince. And if you want to buy a house, homes in Vegas are cheap.

The NTE is not a bad deal. You might work into a job. Or apply for jobs, as a fed employee. I like small towns better, I think you should go with the small town fed job.

I'm leaning toward #2. Curious to know which small town it is.
