I work (to a level of expertise) with a specific software program.
I've been at my current job for approximately 2 years, however I just recently saw that another organization (in a city about 2 hours from where I live) is looking for someone to do the job I do (at a level that is basically my what my current boss does). The posting is "open until filled" and has been up about 3 months -- so I feel like I'd have a very good shot at it.
I enjoy my current job, but my boss has a somewhat difficult personality and I don't really agree with the direction my department is heading. The problem is, the community of people that use this software is somewhat tight-knit and everyone knows each other as we have conferences/meetings between us frequently. It is VERY likely word might get out and that I am "looking elsewhere" and it would come back to my boss. He can be extremely catty at times and I'm worried that this might have a negative impact on my current job if I am to apply and not get the new job/decide not to take it.
There's other considerations as well with this. It would require me to relocate to a more expensive city and if the salary isn't much higher it wouldn't necessarily make sense to move.
Should I take the risk? Generally speaking I am happy and comfortable at my current job (and paid reasonably), other than a few somewhat minor complaints. Any advice?
The only advice I have is to apply to a job you really want, not to get away from the one you have. I've made that mistake a couple of times. If you really want the job, go for it.

Thanks so much for the input...
That's my issue, it's not that I *REALLY* want the job itself. It's basically the same stuff I do now (albeit perhaps more pay since it seems like it would entail more responsibility, but you never know). It's kind of a "grass is greener" feeling that I have... it would be a slight career advancement, but nothing monumental.
Also, what makes it tough is that even though I might have some minor gripes about my current job, I have excellent benefits and generous paid time off, and I ADORE the organization as a whole that I work for. I would honestly be sad to leave it. Blah.
I think you have your answer. Don't second guess yourself.
Yeah, I suppose so. I just hate the fact that essentially what is holding me back from just applying is that I'm scared of repercussions. It seems unfair, but I suppose that's life!
Have you ever thought about running it past your boss? I don't know what kind of relationship you guys have, or how specialized your field is but if word will get around anyway; you should be the one to control it. I would just tell him that you're thinking about how to advance in your career.
If you put in an app at the other place, they may end up calling him anyway to see what kind of worker you are. The real consideration is whether or not there will be repercussions of you applying somewhere else.
OTOH, It seems like you really like your job, so what is the real reason you're moving on. A catty boss doesn't seem like enough reason. If you like the work, the pay is great, and benes are good....What more do you really want? Maybe you should make a pros and cons list.
I forgot to come back on and thank everyone who posted for their insight. I've decided not to apply for the job. The "network" of people that do what I do is just waaay too tight so I'd have to be certain I'm serious about looking elsewhere, and I think I would have to tell my boss first (which, now isn't a good time to say I might be leaving). Thanks guys!
Never EVER EVER tell your boss that you are looking elsewhere. Even in situations as you described. Never. Ever. Ever.
Well... in my situation he would inevitably hear it from someone else, probably before I even get an interview. That's just how it works with the industry I'm in... it's tough!
