I had an interview today for a construction management job. I have been talking on and off with a corporate recruiter (the kind that are hired by firms to find workers externally), and he was the one who set up the interview.

He seems to want me to funnel all communication with the construction firm through him. I called to get the interviewer's e-mail address today, and he said that I should send my follow up "thank you" e-mail to him so that he could proofread it first. Then he said that he was just going to forward it to the guy.

I could easily call and get the interviewer's e-mail address (it wasn't on the card he gave me), but I was wondering... would I be doing anything to step on the toes of the recruiter? While I'm not exactly fond of the process, it's a leg in the door that I don't have otherwise due to my being new to the area.

Yes.

You got the interview through the recruiter. You could do some research and contact the company yourself, however, as you were introduced by the recruiter, whether you take the job through the recruiter or get it directly, the company will be on the hook to pay the recruiter.

And you better believe the minute you go around the recruiter, that recruiter will find plenty of reasons, including telling the client what you did, to make sure you do not get the job.

I am definitely being careful. This guy is well connected in my industry, and he could probably make sure I never get work if I **** him off.

So if I want to follow up on scheduling my next interview... I should call the recruiter?

Yes. The recruiter, at this point, is like HR at the new company. You go through him.
