One of my nephews is fresh out of school & in the process of trying to land a job with a certain company. It's for a management trainee position and he was informed the "process" consists of 7 interviews. Seems a bit absurd. Maybe I'm just a geezer, but I can remember back when 1 interview was sufficient for nearly any job. Are people really that indecisive that they have to subject candidates to 7 interviews?
Depends. Are we talking about seven interviews over seven different days, or are we talking about a series of interviews with seven different groups in the same day, or a combination of the two? Being decisive or indecisive has nothing to do with it; I imagine it is about receiving feedback from multiple levels of employees or stakeholders in an attempt to find the best fit for the company. Unusual? Yes. Unheard of? Certainly not.

What type of job is he going for, so I can avoid it?

That's insane!! I remember the days of having one interview and you either got the job or you didn't. I've been hired on the spot before. Now, they make you jump through hoop after hoop after hoop and still make you wait forever to hear about the outcome. I realize there are a lot of people applying for the same jobs these days and the competition is fierce, but seriously, don't you believe they have their mind made up about you after the first interview, anyway?
This is standard for management/leadership programs. Usually 1 interview is a screening and the following interviews are held on one day. Companies handle management/leadership program hires different than standard entry level.

I agree. I have only had one interviews for jobs I have had and hold now. 7 seems more conductive toward a high-security clearance position with the CIA. For anything else, NO. Normally in a good economy this would mean risking a potential hire as they may get hired elsewhere while these interviews are being set up. As it is an employer's market they know this is less likely.
I can see maybe 3 interviews that are very thorough for a management position, But 7?

The way it works with these leadership programs is that you first have a screening. Then if you pass, you have a day of interviews where you interview with 4-6 people. I see it all the time. These programs are very selective (often requiring a GPA of 3.8 or higher) and only recruit from universities. They are looking for a lifetime leader; not just an employee.
