]Been out of the corporate work force for 6 years now. Worked at home doing consulting since then. I probably will get back into corporate finance/real estate/banking. Left my position at a middle manager level.
Before I left corporate life, Sommon practice on the higher up (manager jobs) (at least in the northeast) were skirt, button up shirt and a nice blazer. Not a three piece suit or anything. Think Anne Taylor, New York and company...Stylish yet not stuffy. Hair pulled backed, light makeup, neat manicured nails. Just polished.
Now where I am look it seemed like its dressed down a bit. A nice skirt and top is just fine, hair pulled back in a clip is fine. Everything is "just fine". Its a bit more on the casual side. Back 7-10 years ago it seemed like the office was a mixture as well. Some dept were business casual, some of the more "experienced" employees walked around in business suits (men and women).
Seems like most offices in the suburbs are business casual whereas in the "city" its still "dress up" to go to work.
Whats corporate life dress like these days post 2007?
Sadly, you've pretty much nailed it. "Business Casual" or business sloppy as I call it has taken over.
For an interview, I'd still shade the dressy end of that spectrum since you never know if you'll get a hiring manager like me who will be really disappointed if you show up under-dressed.
In my office, it varies. 20-30 somethings still dress very well (hair done, makeup, heels, all day every day). There are the occasional 40+ that still dress impeccably, but many look like they rolled out of bed and came into the office (these people seem to be hidden away somewhere when we have client site visits). Pretty much everyone I work with directly dresses extremely well and professionally.
Always look your best for interviewing. First impressions are everything.
