I just had an interview yesterday at a company. The interview went OK. I've had better, and I've had worse.

I have 6 or 8 LinkedIn contacts that work for this company. We all used to work together at a different company 3-5 years ago. Some of them actually worked in the same team as me and I worked with them on a day-to-day basis. Others I just new casually. I have rarely spoken to them in the last few years though.

How appropriate is it for me to reach out to those contacts and ask them to put a good word in for me with the interviewers that I met yesterday?

Honestly I think you missed the boat. I would have contacted them before the interview.

I debated that, but it really happened fast.

I was contacted by the company's recruiter and invited to a small, invitation only, Open House/Job Fair. At the job fair, (Monday at 5pm) I spoke to an engineer with the company and he asked me to come in the next morning (Tuesday at 8:30am) for an interview.

It wouldn't hurt.

Generally, you'd want the referrals prior to the interview.

At worst, they can tell you why you didn't get the job.

If you have a good relationship with them, definitely contact them. Good luck!

Thanks folks

I ended up only contacting a few. . .. .

One guy I hadn't talked to in 3 years, but he saw me as I was leaving the office after the interview and ran up to chat with me. He said that he would put in a good word for me.

For two other guys, I've exchanged emails with them once or twice a year, so I asked them for a recommendation as well.

A fourth guy I met in the lobby before the job fair and chatted with him for 5 minutes before heading up to their office. I looked him up on LinkedIn and discovered that he is the director of engineering, so I invited him to be a contact on LinkedIn. . . . didn't ask for a recommendation from him though

You try to keep regular contact with former co-workers you knew at previous jobs. I would touch base with them about once a year or so.

I would *not* ask the fourth guy for a recommendation. I would assume, you never worked with him directly or indirectly. That is asking someone way too much who does not really know you.

Also, I never ask for recommendations, I just receive them and usually do one in return. It is more genuine that way, but you need to ask people who know you much better if you want to go that route.
