I think bosses expect an applicant to show him or herself at their best , looking as if they've put in some effort, it shows repect.

The best candidate we had recently came in blue jeans and Birkenstocks. For a job in the Financial District in NYC. I'm guessing he won't accept our offer though. Probably end up doing research at some National Lab.

Suit and tie are pretty much the standard unless someone in the company says otherwise. I know, I feel like a tool most of the time too. But if you show up and everyone is in t-shirts and jeans, you can dispose of the tie very easily, and even the jacket if its that casual. I'd maybe even try to get a pant/jacket combo that when worn without the jacket, the pants wouldn't look too dressy (no stripes, grayish maybe?)

Obviously I over think these things.

How do you folks feel about beards? I've had a friend tell me I should shave my beard before interviews even though It's well kept and I've had it for years.

I think neatly kept beards are okay at most places. Maybe not if its a public facing position though. Or some industry like finance in NYC where everyone is type A, and wearing $500 loafers.

Honestly, if the beard is part of who are you, and you don't desperately need the job, I'd keep it. If you're unemployed, I'd pull out all the stops and shave it.

Always always always over dress. Never under dress, that's all the advice you need.

End thread.

I don't think it matters what the day-to-day wardrobe consists of, you should wear a suit and tie for the interview. You can never be too overdressed for an interview but some will knock you for not being dressed well enough.

I've interviewed plenty of people in the past for IT positions and all but one of them was dressed "appropriately". I'm not one that believes how you dress is how you perform but this one guy really stuck out to me. I thought why does he think he can get away with wearing whatever he wants while everyone else is putting in the effort to look presentable.

This is sound advice.

Coat and tie coat and tie coat and tie. And make sure your shoes are polished. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

Always dress your best. It's better to overdress than underdress.
