Well I recieved another phone call to interview for a location in NYC for a fashion retailer company as a Sys Admin. What do you guys typically wear for interviews? I was thinking suit without tie as they are more of a young/trendy company versus going in all formal? Plus its an internal tech job.

Doesn't matter what the job is, impression is important. If you want to go casual and not over-do it, go business casual, dress pants, button down shirt and tie.

I (female) have always dressed in a suit no matter what job I applied for. My reason is that I never know who is going to interview me or see me on the way in. Just last week, I sat down for an interview with a guy wearing mechanics clothes. He told me that he was the mechanic, and I wondered why I was being interviewed by the mechanic, but told him how important his job was to the company. Good thing I did, because he ended up being the owner who was filling in for someone!

I'm beginning to think that it's my bad luck suit, since I haven't got a job and it's been a month. LOL

Suit and tie. They may be "young and trendy", but their back office probably isn't.

Dress a level or two above what you expect to wear on the job. If interviewing for a mechanics position, khakis and button down. If interviewing for a position where business casual is the norm, sport jacket and tie.

You are trying to project the impression that you know what the job entails, and you want to make a good impression by dressing for the part. If you dramatically overdress you risk being viewed as clueless.

For a back office IT position at a fashion retailer in NY I would go suit and tie.

I agree with fishbrains. I have worn a suit and tie to every interview I've gone on for a position that required a degree.

Wear a suit and tie. It is what is expected. And if you are overdressed for an interview, the comments may be along the lines of "wow, he could have skipped the tie" but if you are underdressed and it is below their expectations for what you should have worn, someone WILL see that as disrespectful to the company or not taking the job seriously.

In my suggestion, go for suit with tie. In suit and tie, you will look professional as well as someone who really care for the job and work etiquette. And another most important thing, be confident in the interview, even if you don't know anything. Employers look for confident persons who can handle the pressure and non suitable situations also. Best of luck and ya, post your experience here. Wanna know about the results.

IF this in WC like CA or WA, i wouldn't wear a suit and tie to interview an IT job. I would just wear business casual. Even CEOs don't wear suit and tie in WC. lol

But for your location and company Suit and tie are the probably the way to go.
