I just had a phone interview with a charter school for a teaching position. At the end, she told me that instead of them following up with me, they want ME to follow up with them. She wants me to send an email in the next few days telling them whether or not I'm still interested after having my phone interview, and then they will move on from there (sending them a video of me teaching is the next step). Now granted, this is something I would do anyway, thanking them for the interview, etc., but I've never been asked to do it or told that this is part of the process.

Does this sound like a good sign? She made it sound like they do it with everyone, but I can imagine telling them I'm really interested in the job and that I want it, and then them turning right back around and saying...well, we don't want you. Anyone had any experience with this?

yes. its not necessarily a good sign. they told you that they tell everyone that. its their "line". it screams laziness and inefficient on their part to me. its like when a guy volunteers his number for you to call him. "hey baby heres my number give me a call."

when someone is seriously interested in someone or something they dont leave it chance. it would be different if they scheduled a follow up call for three days from now to discuss the next step. in that case it would be a good sign. instead basically theyre saying call me in a few days to see where we are at and to let us know that were are still on your radar as a top place of employment.

all you can do is call them in a few days to reaffirm your interest. they are also interviewing others i'm sure and you should be applying to other places as well. give it your best shot and if it works out great, if not youll have other opportunities in the pipeline. dont ever put all your eggs in one basket or your hope in one possibility...

good luck.

Good points, thank you. Yes I'm applying to lots of schools and positions, this is just the first interview I've gotten. I will do what she asked, meanwhile applying elsewhere...and see what happens!

Part of it is they want to see who is going to put in the most effort. They figure you don't follow up you must not be that interested.
