Thanks for the input. I doubt her calling makes a difference but she really wants that job as she hates her current one with a passion.

i do this in an e-mail though, i don't send a card or anything.
I just sent a thank you letter to an interview I had last week. I feel like an insecure turd now, but maybe I"m insecure.

Just a reminder, I left interviews for jobs I didn't want and never sent a thank you letter and they still
called me for a 2nd interview

At most large employers, it's possible to check the status of an opening you've applied for on the web. The OP's wife should look for this in the system she used to submit her materials, assuming she applied online.

Notification for unsuccessful candidates is very impersonal nowadays. Ideally that system generates an email when the status changes, but not always.

Most employers are not the "large corporations".
Even with the large companies, they don't always update the status, or do in a timely manner.

Most of the time there is nothing to update because the position was never open.

I generally follow up in a week or two... No response and it's safe to assume you aren't the top candidate.

One thing I've never done in my 20 years on the workforce is send a thank you letter.

that's cool, i got the job i have now without sending a thank you letter (or e-mail) but it still isn't going to hurt, and could help!

Yeah, it costs about $1000 to bring in an applicant, not to mention time spent interviewing, and companies do it because there's no position?

It doesn't hurt to send one, but very often the hiring decision is made within minutes of the candidate leaving.

As someone who does some interviewing, I can hardly keep track of who's who after a few candidates. All the interviewers meet up right after and make the decision immediately.
