I will be moving cross country this fall (early October.) Is it too early to look for employment or set up interviews? When should I start looking? (The company I work for doesn't have offices in my new city.)

I think no more than 60 days in advance. If an employer has a job posted the manager usually needs it filled yesterday however the application screening and interview process can take 30 days. You would be wise to state that you will be moving and be flexible about your availability date.

Much depends on the unemployment rate in your destination community. In Portland it takes a long time to find employment and because of the number of well educated locals seeking work often limit the scope of their recruiting. I hear Seattle is easier, the south Bay area best of all.

Way too early. Start about two months out, three if you have highly technical skills, one if your skills are "generic."

no. its not too early. however be prepaid in case a company would hire you and wants you to move sooner... how will you handle that?

Chances of getting an out-of-state job in this economy?

I found my job here online. I got the initial response 2 days after I emailed my resume. I moved from the Jacksonville area a week later. This was early 2011.

When I changed to a better job this past December I was hired the same day I applied. I work in CNC machining and there is a lot of that work in this area. (Boeing)

I only wish I had applied sooner... I wouldn't have wasted 6 months job hunting in FL after my layoff.

I don't miss the east coast.

Double check--many leases will let you leave early without penalty--or a small ($100 or so) administrative fee if you are relocating for work more than 75 miles away.

try find a work that pay for relocation. My current job even paid for my break lease.
If you can't find one, then you can still leave at Oct.

Should one state in a cover letter that they will be relocating to the area? I've read and heard conflicting advice on doing so.
